00:01 hello English Learners and welcome back
00:04 to English pod my name is Marco and I’m
00:06 Erica how are you Erica Marco I’m doing
00:08 really well today you’re excited uhhuh
00:11 we’ve got a great lesson for everyone
00:13 yes we have a really common situation
00:15 where we’re going to use real English
00:17 right yep everyday English English that
00:19 people really use and that’s what we
00:21 want you to learn what are we talking
00:23 about today specifically today we have a
00:25 really common situation that is a little
00:28 bit embarrassing
00:30 all right an embarrassing situation so
00:33 let’s listen to the dialogue for the
00:35 first time and it’s going to be kind of
00:37 fast yeah but don’t worry if you don’t
00:39 understand everything because after 10
00:42 minutes you’ll understand everything
00:45 Perfect all right let’s
00:47 [Music]
00:55 listen Nick how’s it going oh hey what
01:00 are you doing in this neighborhood do
01:01 you live around here actually my office
01:04 is right around the corner it was great
01:06 to meet you last week at the conference
01:08 I really enjoyed our conversation about
01:09 foreign investment yeah yeah it was
01:12 really interesting you know I’m in a bit
01:15 of a hurry but here’s my card we should
01:17 definitely meet up again and continue
01:18 our discussion sure you still have my
01:21 contact details right you know what this
01:24 is really embarrassing but your name has
01:27 just slipped my mind can you remind me
01:29 sure sure my name is Anna Ferris don’t
01:32 worry about it it happens to me all the
01:34 time I’m terrible with names
01:41 too wow Nick forgot her name yeah that’s
01:45 happened to me a couple of times and I’m
01:47 going to tell you about it a little bit
01:48 later okay all right well let’s start
01:50 with our three language
01:54 takeaways language
01:56 takeaway so our first word on our
01:58 language takeaway is in a bit of a hurry
02:02 in a bit of a hurry in a bit of a hurry
02:05 in a bit of a hurry so Nick was in a
02:08 hurry yeah that’s right this is a great
02:11 phrase so let’s listen to three examples
02:15 of how you can use this phrase example
02:20 one can you drive faster I’m in a bit of
02:23 a
02:26 hurry example two
02:32 I can’t talk right now I’m in a bit of a
02:39 hurry example
02:43 three I’m in a bit of a hurry so I’ll
02:45 check these files
02:48 later okay so it’s clear now basically
02:51 it means that you don’t have time you’re
02:53 moving really quickly okay perfect now
02:56 let’s look at our second language
02:58 takeaway word and it’s it’s contact
03:00 details contact details contact details
03:04 contact details so what are your contact
03:06 details basically this is the
03:09 information you can find on your
03:11 business card all right so we have like
03:14 our name our telephone number your email
03:17 address perhaps your mobile phone number
03:20 so all the useful information so people
03:22 can get in touch with you yep so people
03:24 can phone you or email you okay so
03:26 contact details great okay so our third
03:29 third word is slipped my mind slipped my
03:33 mind slipped my mind slipped my mind so
03:37 this is a funny phrase it’s kind of
03:39 strange right yeah slipped my mind it
03:41 sounds very weird exactly okay so now
03:45 we’re going to listen to two examples of
03:48 this phrase try and see if you can
03:50 figure out what it means example
03:55 one I’m sorry I forgot to respond to
03:57 your email it just slipped my mind
04:02 example
04:05 two don’t you know what day it is today
04:09 oh it’s your birthday it completely
04:11 slipped my
04:15 mind ah so slipped my mind is like I
04:19 forgot you forgot something uhhuh so
04:22 accidentally right okay great now it’s
04:24 time for putting it
04:27 together putting it together
04:31 all right Erica why don’t you tell our
04:32 listeners what putting it together is
04:34 well putting it together helps you put
04:37 language together it helps you be more
04:40 fluent by knowing how words fit together
04:43 great so let’s look at our first phrase
04:45 today and it’s around here around here
04:50 around here around here so this is like
04:54 close by close by right I can say for
04:57 example is there a bank around here yeah
05:00 yeah um so that’s is there a bank close
05:02 to here exactly now this phrase around
05:06 here we can change it a little bit and
05:08 it means something a little bit
05:09 different right I could say Marco
05:12 there’s a great restaurant right around
05:14 the corner right and that would mean
05:17 there is a great restaurant on the other
05:19 Street yep around the corner yep great
05:22 or we have another example we can say
05:25 around there around there right so for
05:28 example I can say uh Los Angeles is a
05:31 great City I used to live around there
05:34 so you used to live near Los Angeles
05:36 exactly all right it’s a really good
05:38 phrase and it’s really common yeah now
05:41 our next phrase in putting it together
05:44 is terrible with terrible with terrible
05:48 with terrible with so we have a couple
05:50 of examples that will show you how this
05:53 phrase
05:55 Works example one
06:00 you’re terrible with numbers you can’t
06:02 even remember your own telephone
06:07 number example
06:11 two I’m terrible with directions I’m
06:14 always getting
06:17 lost example
06:21 three I’m terrible with faces I can
06:23 never remember what people look
06:28 like wow I understand that I’m also
06:32 terrible with numbers I can barely add
06:34 2+
06:36 two well yeah I guess uh not everyone is
06:39 a numbers person I’m terrible with uh
06:42 faces I sometimes forget what people
06:43 look like really yeah uhoh so I think
06:46 it’s time now for us to listen to our
06:48 dialogue a second time okay this time
06:51 the dialogue will be a little bit slower
06:53 right so try and listen for some of the
06:55 words we’ve just talked about
07:01 Nick how’s it going oh hey what are you
07:06 doing in this neighborhood do you live
07:09 around here actually my office is right
07:12 around the corner it was great to meet
07:15 you last week at the conference I really
07:18 enjoyed our conversation about foreign
07:21 investment yeah yeah it was really
07:25 interesting you know I’m in a bit of a
07:28 hurry but here here’s my card we should
07:31 definitely meet up again and continue
07:34 our
07:35 discussion sure you still have my
07:38 contact details right you know what this
07:43 is really embarrassing but your name has
07:46 just slipped my mind can you remind me
07:50 sure my name is Anna Ferris don’t worry
07:55 about it it happens to me all the time
07:59 I’m terrible with names
08:04 too so it’s more clear now you can
08:06 understand a lot better right yeah
08:08 that’s true great so now it’s time for
08:10 us to take a look at fluency
08:13 Builder fluency Builder so with fluency
08:16 Builder we take some very simple phrases
08:20 and show you how you can be more fluent
08:23 or how you can sound more native yeah
08:27 great in the beginning of the dialogue
08:29 Anna said Nick how’s it going yeah this
08:32 is a great phrase it sounds really
08:34 really natural you know sometimes I hear
08:37 students say how are you or how are you
08:40 doing those are two great phrases but
08:43 this one sounds really really natural it
08:46 just sounds more casual yeah let’s
08:49 listen again to that phrase from the
08:52 dialogue how’s it
08:55 going how’s it
08:58 going great so next time that you find a
09:00 friend on the street you can just say
09:02 hey how’s it going yeah so Marco have
09:06 you ever forgotten someone’s name yeah
09:08 it’s happened to me a couple of times
09:10 and actually the most embarrassing
09:12 situation was that I forgot a family
09:14 memb no a family member’s name we had
09:17 like a family reunion and there were a
09:20 lot of aunts and uncles and cousins that
09:23 I hadn’t seen in a while and I just
09:24 forgot one of my uncle’s names and I was
09:27 uhoh that’s pretty embarrassing so what
09:29 did you do well I had to ask one of my
09:32 uh other cousins I’m like hey who is
09:34 that guy he’s like oh that’s Uncle John
09:36 I’m like oh man I totally forgot yeah so
09:38 it was really embarrassing because I
09:40 didn’t know what to call him so I just
09:42 called him Uncle cuz I didn’t know his
09:44 name hi Uncle yeah oh yeah so when that
09:48 happens to me when I’m in a business
09:50 setting sometimes what I do is I ask for
09:54 someone’s card ah yeah that’s the good
09:57 technique yeah or sometimes I might ask
09:58 them to write down their email cuz
10:01 usually their full name is spelled out
10:03 in their email address so that’s my
10:04 trick when I forgotten someone’s name
10:06 that’s a good trick and I guess a lot of
10:08 our listeners can take your advice on
10:10 that okay so I think it’s time for us to
10:13 listen to our dialogue one more time
10:16 this time at natural
10:25 speed Nick how’s it going oh hey
10:30 what are you doing in this neighborhood
10:31 do you live around here actually my
10:34 office is right around the corner it was
10:36 great to meet you last week at the
10:37 conference I really enjoyed our
10:39 conversation about foreign investment
10:41 yeah yeah it was really interesting you
10:44 know I’m in a bit of a hurry but here’s
10:46 my card we should definitely meet up
10:48 again and continue our discussion sure
10:50 you still have my contact details right
10:53 you know what this is really
10:55 embarrassing but your name has just
10:57 slipped my mind can you remind me
10:59 sure my name is Anna Ferris don’t worry
11:02 about it it happens to me all the time
11:04 I’m terrible with names
11:09 too well I hope that you’ve all enjoyed
11:11 our lesson for today and remember to
11:14 check out our website at englishpod
11:17 do.com where you can find a lot of other
11:20 resources and you can leave all your
11:22 questions and comments yeah Marco and I
11:24 are always on the site so we’re happy to
11:26 answer all of your questions exactly so
11:28 now it’s time for us to say
